The 78th Golden Lion National High School Baseball Tournament and Weekend League King of the Kings (co-hosted by Dong-A Ilbo, Sports Donga, and Korea Baseball Softball Association) begins.
This year's competition will be held at Mokdong Stadium and Shinwol Stadium from the 14th to the 28th. Including last year's winning team, Busan High School, 57 schools from 14 regions across the country that participated in the first half of the weekend league will participate. Tickets can be purchased on-site or through Interpark reservations for 10,000 won for adults and 4,000 won for students (preference given to seniors over 65 and the disabled). SPOTV will broadcast live from the quarterfinals to the finals, and all games can be viewed on the Korea Baseball Softball Association's YouTube channel.
This tournament will begin with the first round match between Daegu Sangwon High School and Gyeonggi Commercial High School to be held at Mokdong Stadium at 9:30 a.m. on the 14th. In the first round, much attention is also paid to the match between Incheon High School and Busan High School scheduled for the 17th at Mokdong Stadium. Incheon High School, ranked first in the Seoul-Incheon region (4 wins, 1 loss) in the first half of the 2024 High School Baseball Weekend League, and defending champion Busan High School, ranked first in Gyeongsang Region C (6 wins, 0 losses), are expected to warm up the atmosphere in the early stages of the tournament. Incheon High School, which failed to advance to the quarterfinals last year, will once again attempt to win its third championship following 1954 and 1989.
Another championship candidate, Deoksu High School, ranked first in Seoul Area A (6 wins, 0 losses), also attracts attention. Prior to this competition, Deoksu High School, which won the E-Mart Cup last month, passed the first round with a bye. In the second round, they will face the winner of the Dogae High-Hwaseong Dongtan BC match to be held on the 18th. Both Dogae High School and Hwaseong Dongtan BC are teams that are in the middle or lower ranks in their respective regions. Accordingly, some say that Deoksu High School's matchup was decent, but as they were victims of the upset of losing to Incheon High School in the second round last year, they should not let down their guard this year as well.
There are many noteworthy pro nominees this year as well. On the pitcher side, right-hander Jeong Woo-joo from Jeon High School and left-hander ace Jeong Hyun-woo from Deoksu High School, who have fast and strong fastballs of up to 150 km/h, stand out. On the fielder side, Masan Yongma High School infielder Cha Seung-jun and Deoksu High School infielder Park Jun-soon are attracting attention. Cha Seung-jun had a batting average of 0.474 (9 hits in 19 at-bats), 4 home runs, and 16 RBIs in 6 games in the first half of the weekend league (Gyeongsang A), and Park Jun-soon had a batting average of 0.500 (9 hits in 18 at-bats), 5 RBIs, and 5 stolen bases in 6 games.
This year, attention is also focused on the participation of club teams, which has nearly doubled compared to last year. There are a total of 10 teams, including Ulsan Technical High School BC, Geoje BC, Cheonan CS, Bundang BC, Miryang BC, EPBC (formerly Eunpyeong BC), Suncheon Hyocheon BC, Daegu Buk-gu SC, Hwaseong Dongtan BC, and Namyangju GK. Unlike last year, when most of the contestants did not make it past the second round, attention is being paid to what kind of story will be created this year. 스포츠토토
